Gleena, meaning clay is Russian, is the shop of Asya Palatov. All of her tableware pieces are porcelain and handmade in her studio in Rhode Island. Her work is influenced by her Russian upbringing in St. Petersburg and her graphic design experiences. Absolutely exquisite.
I've been looking at the Keil Stool designed by Daniel Heer for awhile now. The stool is constructed of European Oak or Black Walnut and leather which is tanned in pits using a method that dates back to the 17th century. No glue or nails were used in it's assembly. A very functional yet elegant piece....available at Matter. The price is beyond my budget ($2,500... yikes) but window shopping is free.
Since 1966 Crate and Barrel has always had a partnership with the Finnish design house of Marimekko. But just last week, Crate and Barrel launched an online Marimekko shop full of pillows, kitchenware, bedding, bath accessories, bags, furniture, clothing and other accessories. The kitchenware collection is by far the best including dinnerware, serving ware, teapots, tea towels, table linens and even paper napkins. If you happen to live in New York City, their Broadway and Madison Ave stores have their very own Marimekko shop.
I have always been a huge fan of linen and someday I hope to have a linen duvet cover. Linoto makes their duvet covers right here in the USA (NYC to be exact) from 100% imported linen. Filigree Creations is an Etsy shop out of Latvia that makes these amazing lampshades. The shades are constructed of sewing thread and non toxic water based glue. They can fit on pretty much all sorts of pendant lamp bases but they do require energy saving low heat bulbs. Perfect way to add some pop to a living, bedroom, studio or office. Choose a lighter shade for the brightest light. Prices are fair at about $40.
If you live in Australia, you're in luck. If not, you can at least browse through the Eco Chic, the best eco-friendly furniture and housewares site I have seen in a long time. Every single one of their products falls into one of the following green categories: 1) Made from renewable resources, 2) made from recycled and recyclable materials, 3) made from non-toxic and non allergenic materials, 4) made in Australia, 5) fair trade certified or 6) GECA certified. Wish they were local....
Rejuvenation is the best source for time period lighting, hardware and house parts. They have an amazing design gallery that let's you scroll through hundreds of rooms from kitchens to bathrooms to bedrooms and every nook and cranny in between. I could spend hours looking at these pictures.... mentally creating my dream home room by room. (SIGH) Check out Rejuvenation.
Supermarket is a great place to find INDIE designers.... like Romi Ceramics. All these pieces are designed by a ceramic artist out of Long Island City, NY. They are handmade using a porcelain slip-casting technique. The folded vases are exquisite and the other vessels are equally beautiful in their simplicity.
The perfect little tabletop accessory for Easter... fill this white ceramic bird dish with candy, nuts, olives (okay, I suppose olives might be weird). Ideal for the spring season... or use it year round to store other treasures. Find it online at the UK shop Red Lilly.
A brief note about my "relaunch". It seems as though I was a bit dramatic with my plans for the blog. It was more of a refresh.... nevertheless, I hit my target date! High five!
